How a Chipotle order adds up

Every Chipotle entrée is built from the same line: a tortilla or base, rice, beans, a protein, salsas and toppings. The biggest single item is often the one people forget: the burrito tortilla alone has more calories than any protein on the line.

Rice and beans add up quickly too. A scoop of either cilantro-lime rice carries the same calories, and a scoop of beans adds roughly two thirds as much again. Skipping rice is the easiest way to trim a bowl without losing protein.

The creamy toppings are where totals jump. Cheese, sour cream and queso blanco each add more than 100 calories, and guacamole adds more than a portion of chicken. Pick the one you want most rather than all of them.

Burrito or bowl?

A burrito bowl has exactly the same fillings as a burrito, minus the tortilla. Build your usual burrito, then tap Bowl at the top: the total drops by the full tortilla and nothing else changes.

Getting more protein at Chipotle

Chicken is the highest-protein option in Chipotle's chart, and double meat doubles it. Beans also add real protein, so a bowl with double chicken and beans, no rice, gets very high protein for its calories. Watch the protein box in the totals as you build.

Watch the sodium

Chipotle orders are often high in sodium. The burrito tortilla, fresh tomato salsa, the red tomatillo salsa and the chipotle-honey vinaigrette are among the saltiest single items in the chart. Tap More nutrients in the totals to see sodium as you build.

Tips for a lighter Chipotle order

Choose a bowl or salad instead of a burrito. Use fajita veggies, romaine and the lighter salsas for volume. Pick one creamy topping, not three. On a salad, the vinaigrette is optional, and it has more calories than a portion of chicken.
